We are very happy to share our commitment to actively compensate the excess carbon generated from our delivery service. It means that we are focused on creating an environmental benefit by removing additional CO2 from the atmosphere. In other words, we are striving to be carbon negative or rather climate positive :)
Why planting trees?
According to a study from the University of Oxford, trees are the best technology to suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reverse global warming. So, we have embraced this idea with a local environmental organization, Plantar Uma Árvore (literally Planting a Tree) and also with an international non-profit organization One Tree Planted.
Furthermore, this initiative is in line with the Declaration of the United Nations establishing 2011-2020 as the Decade on Biodiversity and 2021-2030 as the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
Who is the organization Plantar Uma Árvore?
We chose Plantar Uma Árvore because we are a Portuguese company and this is a local organization. We are well aware of the climate crisis due to a decade of harsh fires destroying our precious forest heritage.
It’s a volunteer program dedicated to the promotion and conservation of the Portuguese native forest and indigenous species. So it is not just about planting trees. It aims for biodiversity, conservation, and adaptation to climate change. Check our company's certificate here.
How is CO2 compensation estimated?
We don’t have yet accurate data and scientific certification to estimate the carbon dioxide emissions resulting from our service. However, we are currently working with entities expert on the field to enable us to quantify.
Besides, it is not possible to have an accurate annual estimation of CO2 compensated by planting trees, due to the vast biodiversity. In other words, each species has its own rhythm of growth and its volume depends highly on maturity.
Still planting one tree per day stands for 365 trees and at least 100 tons of CO2 compensated.
In short, on the one hand, we keep seeking ways to minimize CO2 emissions; on the other hand we compensate by planting trees. So, we believe that planting one tree per day and 365 trees per year is a small step for a greater purpose.
Why did we choose One Tree Planted?
We chose One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization focused on global reforestation, because we wanted to contribute to Australia’s restoration of over 6 million trees across the country, which were devastated by unprecedented wildfires earlier this year.
Our amazing community has teamed up with us referring a friend, and so we’ll plant an extra tree in Australia. We proudly share our company’s Tree Certificate here.
Bamboo and Plastic: Environmental footprint
Did you know that the environmental footprint in the delivery process of a bamboo toothbrush is not higher than in the plastic toothbrush bought at a local store? In fact, we are all following the same distribution routes.
For example, if you go to your local store to buy a toothbrush, it is the same route as the postman bringing it to your mailbox. So each one has its own carbon footprint. This is indeed a common problem of every brand regardless of the type of business (online subscription or traditional purchase).
The Bam&Boo journey
- Brand fulfillment center
- Transport (exclusive) to post office (2km)
- Transport (non-exclusive*) to each country’s post office
- Postman distribution (non-exclusive*)
- Customer’s Home
*non-exclusive transport means we’re only using transports that were already planned and not specific ones. So, the real additional impact is the one brought by increased weight and volume on those transports (e.g. delivering 1 toothbrush x 12 times or 12 toothbrushes x 1 time is the same).
The plastic toothbrush journey
- Brand regional fulfillment center
- Transport (exclusive) to brand local facilities (country warehousing)
- Transport (exclusive) to customer fulfillment center
- Transport (non-exclusive) to customer stores
- Average x days of stock at store shelves (light/AC/…)
- Customer heading to/from local store (non-exclusive)
- Customer’s home
We are not perfect but we strive to do our best to regain ecological integrity, enhance human well-being and keep improving our Planet Earth.
